When a Purifier Helps
HEPA air purifiers are effective at reducing airborne particulate matter: dust, allergens, pet dander, mold spores, and smoke particles in the room where the purifier is running. If your air quality issue is particle-based and localized to one or two rooms, a properly sized HEPA purifier is a reasonable investment.
When It Does Not Help
A purifier does not fix poor ventilation and CO2 buildup. It does not remove gaseous pollutants like NO2 from gas stoves (HEPA filters are for particles, not gases). It does not address mold growing behind a wall. It does not solve humidity problems. And a purifier in the living room does not help with the bedroom allergens you breathe during sleep. If you buy a purifier without knowing what the actual problem is, there is a real chance it will not address your symptoms. The assessment identifies the cause first, and recommends a purifier only when one would actually help.
